CHOIR ANNIVERSARY

MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES

Sunday, October 19, 2008

Eddie Robinson, Guest Lectionary Liturgist
Minister of Music, New Mount Olive Baptist Church, Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Worship Planning Notes
A. On this occasion, the church is likely to have guest choirs, soloists, musicians, and groups. The service should be carefully planned with their participation in mind. Be certain to make arrangements for persons of all age groups and for the disabled.  Also, although the choir is to be lauded on this occasion, as indicated in today’s lection reading, God is always our primary audience during worship.

B. Because this is a special day in the life of the music ministry, select and recognize:

1. All new members of the choir in the past year;
2. The choir’s favorite song of the year;
3. Emeritus membership status for those choir members who, during the year, became unable to participate due to aging and/or illness;
4. The current eldest male and female choir member.

C. Before worship begins, station exhorters in various areas of the sanctuary.  Let the exhorters read Psalm 150. The choir then sings “PRAISE HIM” at the end of each verse in the lectionary Scripture. The musicians accompany the choir/exhorters using whatever key is comfortable for the exhorter(s). Key changes would be highly effective as each new exhorter begins.

                Psalm 150
Praise ye the Lord.  Praise God in his sanctuary.
PRAISE HIM! in the firmament of his power.
PRAISE HIM! for his mighty acts.
PRAISE HIM! according to his excellent greatness.
PRAISE HIM! with the sound of the trumpet.
PRAISE HIM! with the psaltery and harp.
PRAISE HIM! with the timbrel and dance.
PRAISE HIM! with stringed instruments and organs.
PRAISE HIM! upon the loud cymbals.
PRAISE HIM! upon the high-sounding cymbals.
Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord.
Praise ye the Lord.

1. Invocation or Litany
(a) Organ Prelude - To God Be the Glory. By Fannie J. Crosby. Arr. by Ron and Linda for piano and organ duet

(b) Call to Worship

 We Have Come to Celebrate!
Leader: The Lord is great and we have come to celebrate!
All: Yes, let’s celebrate for all that God is doing, has done, and will do.
We lift up praise everywhere we go!
Leader: As we reflect on our lives, we know that only a great God could have protected us and our ancestors. We know only a great God is gracious and merciful enough to sustain us for generations to come.
All: Amen! The Lord is great and brings joy to the whole world. God is our God forever and ever!

(c) Invocation – You Built Music into Creation. By Sherrie Dobbs Johnson

O Master of Music,
When you created the world, you built music into creation. Early morning breezes and bird songs woke us up this morning. They remind us you are still on the throne. The gentle music of babbling books or ocean waves brings us peace. The symphony of blowing tree leaves causes us to look up and give thanks. The staccato of thunder captures your boldness and leaves no doubt you are in charge.

And then, God, you gave humans the capacity to make music. We gather today to sing the songs of our ancestors. These songs carried them through life’s joys and sorrows, through the challenges and victories of living. These songs gave them a way to shout, cry, pray to you, and rely on you. This music we make together gives faith to embrace life’s fullness. Thank you for the songs of faith. Amen.
