Worship Planning Notes

This Advent season, we have taken our congregations on a worship journey with Jesus. On the First Sunday of Advent (which also emphasized World AIDS Day), we focused on Jesus’ coming to the world to minister to the marginalized and the outcast, and we emphasized the power of his touch in our lives. The Second Sunday, we were admonished to remember the promises of God—the blessing in believing/ transformation. In the Third Sunday, just as Mary declared her song of praise (the Magnificat), we too are filled with joyous expectation of Jesus’ coming.
In this Fourth Week of Advent, the joy of expectation culminates in the promise that Christ is indeed with us, even as we wait for his return; we are his beloved, and we are his own. This service should emphasize Christ’s desire to abide with us, to work both in us and through us, all to prepare us for his return. Consider the following as you plan your worship:
A. The color violet marks the Advent season. This color may be used for clergy and choir vestments. Adorn the church with violet Advent banners with wording such as: “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” or “Hope, Peace, Love, and Joy,” etc. These banners may be hung or placed on banner floor stands. Consider also having vinyl banners hung outdoors. You may also incorporate the color violet through candles in your Advent wreath or other greenery.
B. One songwriter says, “Lift up the trumpet and let it ring. Jesus is coming again!” (See 1(a) and 12(b).) Add brass instrumentation to this majestic tune and stage a dramatic processional or recessional of your clergy and choirs and your liturgical dance and/or flag ministry with violet worship flags and streamers.
C. Consider an Advent Pageant by the children to include music, storytelling, dance, song, and other art forms. This would be a great opportunity to partner with other local churches, and it could become an annual outreach event.
D. Compile reflections, poems, litanies, prayers, etc. written by your members into an Advent Devotional for this year’s Advent journey. Give your members plenty of preparation time by notifying them at the beginning of September to send in their submittals. In addition to the writings, also include renderings from the artists in your congregation.
